US Army

Click here to see how you can help. Continue reading about a call from Jeff Fogle and a visit from the UN.

Just as we were about to “break” for lunch, it got busy around here. The phone rang and it was Jeff Fogle (chaplain) with US Army 82nd Airborne & 173rd Cavalry. His unit is busy distributing water and rations. He said they were trying to figure out where to airlift the critically wounded, and asked what I knew about hospitals. I gave him a list of hospitals, approximate distances from PAP, and as many phone numbers for other contacts as I could. It’s crazy to think that because Jeff wrote down our number and called, the US Army could be saving someone’s life right now? Jeff said that when the entire 82nd Airborne gets here, they’re 4000 strong.

Then, more knocking at the gate. We looked outside and saw a UN Nissan Patrol. A Belgian officer asked to know more about what we were doing. She sat down in our kitchen and we talked. She was quite candid and told me that many of her colleagues in PAP were sleeping in their UN vehicles and trying to evacuate—others unaccounted for. From the regional offices here, all they have been able to do thus far was send four large trucks to Port-au-Prince yesterday to remove and bury dead bodies.
